A YEAR IN REVIEW

I can easily say that 2013 has been my favourite year.
So many changes, and new experiences!!
There are too many things to mention, so I thought I would

January // The year began, and what better way to begin the year than getting engaged!

February // I started my temple preparation courses, and started counting down the days until I could go to the temple!

March // We bought our wedding bands. The rings that would never come off our fingers.

April // The time had finally come for me to receive my endowments. It was such a beautiful experience. One I will never forget!

May // The Tulip Festival is my favourite event in Ottawa. It was so much fun to walk around the canal with family. The pre wedding butterflies were getting more and more intense.

June // We got the keys to our apartment and were able to start getting things put together. It was really starting to sink in that we were actually getting married.

July // The big day. On the fourth we became husband and wife. The best decision either one of us have made.

August // We were lucky enough to go to Maine for a few days. A little mini vacation in my favourite place, to end the summer.

September // We added a new member to the family: our little kitty Samwise Gamgee. He is quite a character, but we love him to pieces!

October // We celebrated our anniversary of our first date (a few weeks late), along with one year of being a couple. I still can't believe how fast that year went. We also enjoyed Thanksgiving with my family, and then Monday had our own mini Thanksgiving.

November // I finally started to get more adventurous with cooking and preparing meals. Who knew there were so many different types of paninis you could make!

December // Our first Christmas as a married couple. Neither one of asked for anything in particular, so everything was surprise.

2013 was an incredible year.
But I know 2014 will be even better!
I can't to see what's in store for our little family!

Happy New Year everyone!

FRIEND DATE

Since we got married, we have been accumulating party games.
We so desperately want to play them, but there is a down side.
We haven't been accumulating friends.
I've mentioned before how hard it has been to transition in the ward.
Being the only newlyweds is odd, and that's not even mentioning the fact that we are the only couple who don't have kids.
Double awkward.
Seriously, all our married friends have kids, or are pregnant, or live in another city.
So whenever we have out of town friends down for a visit, we always snap them up.

Meet Dave and Catherine.
Yes they are married.
And yes they have been mistaken as siblings. (multiple times)
Dave and I were in the same ward when we were in youth, and grew up together.
We met Catherine through Youth Conference.
Their story is quite adorable, but I won't take up this whole post with the details.
We just love these two and wish we could live in the same city!

They were down from Montreal for a few days, visiting Dave's family during the Christmas break.
Sunday we invited them back to our place for bacon, and egg sandwiches, Christmas goodies and some good old catching up.
Since they got married 2 months before us, we are literally in the exact same stage of life.
It's fun to talk with people who are just as new to all the marriage thing as we are.

I'm grateful to have friends near and far that make for great company!

HOLIDAY LIPS

I have always been a huge fan of simple eye makeup and bright lips.
So when Christmas and New Year's time comes, I always bring out my red lipsticks.
I thought I would share with you all my 4 favourite red lipsticks.
1// Santa Baby
I've been a long time lover of Lush's It Started with a Kiss lip tint, but I ran out this year. I was planning on just replacing it, but I went with their limited addition Santa Baby instead. It is such a pretty bright red!

2// Red Red Red
This is the very first red lipstick I ever bought, and it is also the brightest! A super fun colour that works in every season.

3// Cardinal Plum
A more subtle red lipstick. If you are one that isn't into a popping red, I recommend this one by l'Oreal. It's very soft, but can be built up if you want something more intense.

4// Really Red
This is the darkest lipstick I own. I always feel very posh whenever I wear it. It dresses up any look.

What are your lipstick recommendations for the holidays?

AFTER CHRISTMAS

Today is Boxing Day.
aka the Canadian equivalent to Black Friday.
I worked a 4am-12:30 shift, and I have come to the conclusion that I hate Boxing day.

No it's not the crowds.
No it's not the rude costumers.
No it's not because I had to work.

It's the fact that after a day where we are supposed to be in an attitude of giving, majority of Canadians are lining up outside of stores to spend hundreds of dollars on things they don't even need.
Some people seem more excited about Boxing Day, than they are for Christmas.
And this makes me sad.

So while a lot of people I know are running around looking for deals, I'm at home in leggings and a cardigan.
I'd much rather be at home keeping the spirit of Christmas (and Christ) in my mind.
Besides, Christmas is still here.
Christmas isn't about the turkey dinner.
Christmas isn't about the deals in the stores the next day.
Christmas isn't about the presents.
It's in His presence.

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas day :)

DIY SERIES: ENTRY #1

I found this adorable bow garland on Pinterest, and I decided to make a Christmas version.
One of the easiest, and cutest DIY ever.
The template is available here.

All I did was follow the tutorial on Honey and Fritz.
I was so happy with result.
The perfect Christmas garland!

MAY YOUR DAYS BE

Clearly we have kitten. No decorations on the bottom of the tree.
I love Christmas time.
I love thinking of something special to get someone.
I love wrapping gifts.
I love the music.
I love the smiles from strangers.
I love the generosity.
I love the smells.

I still can't believe Christmas is almost a week away!!!
I just wish people would keep the spirit of Christmas with them all year round.

A REALIZATION

I have come to a realization.
One that has been quite a shock for me.
I am self conscious.
It is very common, especially for women, but I have never realized it until a couple months ago.

Here's the story.
Two years ago I lost weight, quite a lot of weight actually.
I never felt fat or uncomfortable in my own skin, even when I was bigger.
But when Alex and I got married, we started to eat pizza, candy, and waffles.
Not everyday, but more often than I was used to.
And I started to gain weight.
Not a lot, just a little.
My clothes started to feel tight, and when I looked in the mirror I saw a girl who was bigger than I was before I lost the weight.
And that scared me.
I wanted to get back on track, so we bought a scale.
Turned out I only gained 10 pounds, but to me it felt like I gained back every pound I worked so hard to loose.

Thankfully I have the most incredible husband, who never made me feel ugly or fat when I was with him.
But as soon as I walked by a mirror I saw something different than he did.
I was tired of feeling this way.
So I made a decision.
Something needed to change.

Instead of saying yes to my coworkers when they offered a sweet, I would say no.
Instead of going on my laptop, I would work out as soon as I got home.
Instead of focusing on things that I hate about my body, I would focus on the things I love.
Instead of letting discouraging thoughts come into my mind, I would remember who I am:
A daughter of God.

It's only been a week and half since I made this commitment and I already see a change.
Yes I lost 7 pounds already, but that isn't what's changed.
I feel stronger, and most importantly, happier.
Our bodies are a beautiful gift, and we need to remember that.
I feel like I needed these few months of bad feelings to fully understand that concept.
My body is a gift.
And it is beautiful.
I am beautiful.

DAYS LIKE THESE

instagram // @bekahbaronins
Today it snowed.
All day.
Work wasn't fun.
At all.
But I had the sweetest surprise.
The sweetest.
When I walked through the front door Alex was on the couch.
I had totally forgot that it is now exam time, which means no more classes!
So we cuddled up on the couch and watched a movie, while it continued to blizzard outside.

Days like these are what I live for.
Putting off chores, late dinners, hot chocolate and cuddles.
The snow can just keep falling for all I care.
I have everything I need right here.

SIMPLICITY

Yesterday I was able to witness something beautiful.
My mom picked me up at work and we did some grocery shopping.
As we were walking to the car, a lady who was parked beside us was having a rough time trying to lift a huge box by herself.
My mom, without hesitation, ran over to help.
She didn't do it because I was watching.
She didn't do it to get a thank you.
She didn't talk about it when we got into the car.
She just did it to help.

That is true service.
That is the Christmas spirit.
And that is exactly what my faith is all about.
Simplicity.

AN ADVENT CALENDAR

Since December has begun, the advent calendar was finally able to go up!
This year I combined 2 advent calendars:
1// A Christ centered advent calendar
2// A box advent calendar
I didn't want it to a traditional, candy count down to Christmas.
Instead I wanted something that focused on the true meaning of Christmas.
My Saviour

THOUGHTS ON A THURSDAY

// Paninis and almond milk. Obsessed.
// I love when Alex has only one evening shift. Hooray for evening cuddles and movie nights!
// Not looking forward to my 10pm - 6am shift tonight. Yes you read that right. All in the name of black Friday everyone.
// Can't get enough of this song!
// Been almost a week since I saw Catching Fire, and I can't wait to see it again!!!

How is your week so far?

DESIGN SERIES: ENTRY 1

I find that fonts can make or break a blog's design.
There have been quite a few designs that I've had in my head, but when I put them on the screen it doesn't work, simply because of the font.
Here are a few tips to follow when looking for a font.

First: Think of a theme
It's important to think what specific look you are going for.
Whether it be modern, classic, fun, or minimalistic, remember to look for fonts that work well together and with your theme.

Second: Use different fonts
It's ok to mix up fonts.
Don't over do it and use the same font for everything.
Change it up!
If you're using a simple font for your header, add some handwritten fonts for detail.

Third: Don't be afraid of colour
If you want a certain word, or phrase to stand out, a great to do this is to change the colour.
I'm a lover of everything black, so adding colour is it a bit out of my comfort zone, but I am also a firm believer in having pops of colour.
Now with that being said, don't go overboard with too many colours.
Mood boards are a great way to get inspired and to find a few colours that go well together.

Fourth: Clear navbar
There is nothing more annoying than visiting a new blog, and not being able to read the words on the navbar.
It is best to stay away from handwritten/calligraphy fonts on your navbar.
Even though they are pretty, I'd suggest keeping it simple with your navbar.

Sixth: Experiment
I like to experiment with spacing, italics, bold and Capslock.
Some fonts look completely different in lowercase than they do in uppercase.
You may come across a font that looks kind of odd in lower case, but once you put a space in between each letter it can change the entire look.
Have fun with it and experiment.
Try using a font different ways, and figure out which one works best.

As a little treat, I'm sharing of few of my favourite fonts with you all!
Enjoy!

SOME NEWS

A change on the blog, once again.
By now, none of you should be surprised.
But this time it isn't just a design change.

First: Name change
Yes I did change the name.
I found that A&B was just too generic.
So I slightly tweaked the lyrics to a song I loved when I was younger.
"These are days, we'll remember."
Everyday should be remembered.
Especially these days.

Second: Tutorials
I was surprised at the response I got about doing design tutorials.
And since I have become to love designing my blog, and learning some great tricks, I thought it was about time I shared with you all!
So stay tuned for some fun how-tos!

Third: Design
I was a little sick of the lack of colour on my blog.
Why not have a little pop of green?

Fourth: Videos
I want to have a better communication with my readers.
So this is where you all come in.
I just added a FAQ page, and I would love to get questions from all of you!
I am also toying around with the idea to some videos.
Any suggestions?

Fifth: Content
Now even though there are quite a few changes, the content will be the same.
Well mostly.
This blog will still be first and foremost a lifestyle blog, but I want to branch out more.
DIYs, tutorials, photography, a place to post my inspirations, collaborations, and giveaways.

After reading this post by one of my favourite blogs, I thought I would jump on the bandwagon of change.
And not just a design change this time.
I want to step out of my comfort zone a little, and try some new things.
So get ready.
It's going to be a blast!

22.11.13

This morning started out like a regular morning.
My alarm went off.
Pretty normal.
Then all of a sudden, Alex rolls over and starts cuddling me.
He was wide awake so we talked for 5 minutes.

The usual routine goes something like this:
My alarm goes off, I kiss Alex, get ready, come back and kiss him goodbye.
He is usually in the adorable super tired stage and just kisses me back in his sleep.
I did not want to leave.

21.11.13

One week.
It's been one week since I deactivated my Facebook account.
And I feel
free.
I've been thinking about doing it for months now, and finally decided to just do it.
I had so many stupid excuses, and I was sick of making them.

I've decided to spend my time with things that actually matter.
We all have the same amount of hours in a day.
What we choose to do with these precious hours makes all the difference.

20.11.13

Today I was in a crafty mood.
So I made our advent calendar.
Well started making our advent calendar.
I'll be revealing the finished project in a couple days.

Speaking of revealing, I redesigned our blog... again.
I started to figure out font books, etc.
I had a nerdy, excited moment last night.
Alex got a kick out of it.
Also, if any of you are interested in blog design tutorials, leave a comment, and you may see some in the future!

18.11.13

I am quite a picky eater, but when it comes to Alex cooking his mission food, I am hooked.
Today was a very productive day.
When I came home from work, the kitchen was a mess (leftover from last night's cooking)
We spent a good hour or two scrubbing the counter tops, stove, dishes and floors.
I don't think there is a more satisfying feeling than having a clean kitchen.

An added bonus:
Spending the time with your best bud, who also happens to be your husband.

16.11.13

One of the many perks of serving in the youth program is attending temple trips.
It was such a beautiful experience to have with my Young Women.
When I was a laurel, a few of these girls were beehives.
And now I get to teach them every Sunday.
I get to see glimpses of their testimonies, and see the switch flip when they grasp something, and it is so special to see.
But today was even more special.
I got to hear every single girl in attendance share their testimony.
I love this calling.
I love these girls.
I love this gospel.

Another thing that I love about the temple, is returning to the place where we got engaged.

14.11.13

Tonight was a much needed catch up/girls night with Elise.
We haven't hung out since the wedding day, so it was long overdue!
Eating crepes, a ukulele jam session, cuddling Sammy and talking.
I am so grateful to have such a strong friendship with this girl.
A beautiful girl inside and out.

13.11.13

Something that made the day not ok:
Coming home to Christmas decorations all over the floor.
Sammy had a little bit too much fun while we were at work.

Some things that made the day the best:
Watching Catching Fire clips ( one week !!! )
Getting a text from Alex just saying "I miss you. I love you."
I love that boy more and more everyday.

8.11.13

It's starting to look like Christmas around our little home.
And I love it.
Bring on the season!

7.11.13

I am sitting on the couch,
watching a kitten play,
and listening to a husband make dinner.
I really hate these days when I feel like I can't do anything.
Pains in my back.
My legs ache.
And a start of a headache.
I so desperately want to be dancing around the kitchen, helping Alex make dinner.
But I am here.
On this couch.

6.11.13

A cup of herbal tea.
A favourite book.
A cuddle with a kitty and husband.
A movie night.
And a Christmas tree.

Some days are rough at work.
But it's the things that I come home to that make it all worth it.

5.11.13

I discovered the most amazing cookie recipe, and I just had to share with you all!

Ingredients:

2 cups of flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

1 cup craisins

1 cup butter/margarin

1 cup sugar

1 egg

1 tbsp orange zest

2 tsp vanilla

Directions:

1// Make orange zest. Pretty self explanatory. If you don't have a zester, a fine cheese grader works fine.

2// Mix together margarine, egg, sugar, orange peel and vanilla

3// Once mixed, add flour, baking powder, salt and cranberries.

4// Preheat oven for 350 degrees and place dough on a cookie sheet.

5// Bake in oven for 8-12 minutes. Remove and cool.

And voila!
Some incredibly delicious cookies that remind me of Christmas :)

4.11.13

I am so grateful to have Alex in my life.
He never fails to lift me up when I am feeling down.
He tells me I'm beautiful, when I feel like a mess.
He cuddles me without saying a thing.
Sometimes just lying in silence is all I need.

I love him.

More and more everyday.

Oh and happy 4 months!

1.11.13

I'm ready for Christmas.
The fake poinsettias are out.
The wreath is being hung.
The Christmas tree is being bought this week.
The crafts are being thought out.
The gift shopping begins.
And this song is on repeat. (I admit we were listening to it on Saturday.)

31.10.13

H A P P Y   H A L L O W E E N!!!

Love,
A Parisian girl and her kitty

29.10.13

I feel that once you've met that someone, your calendar is filled with anniversaries.
But I guess that's not so bad.
Today we are celebrating our "one year of being a serious couple".

This time last year I called Alex and nervously shared my feelings.
Thankfully he felt the same.
Because that would have been rather uncomfortable.
And trust me, I felt awkward enough taking that step.

We are celebrating by ordering a pizza, and renting a movie.
We firmly believe that no one should cook on anniversaries, but are too lazy to leave home.
No shame.

27.10.13

I hope you all come to know of this truth.
Have a happy Sunday!

26.10.13

Last night I decided to be a little adventurous with some guacamole.
First thing you need to know about me, I do not cook without a recipe.
Ever.
I am too terrified to make anything without directions.
But when I bought a pomegranate that came with a pamphlet that had a picture the seeds on top of guacamole, I knew I had to try it.
So I got home, and literally just made some off the top of my head.
I took ingredients that are foolproof for me and mixed away.
And both Alex and I are hooked!!!

Pomegranate Guacamole

1 avocado
1tsp of garlic plus
1/4 cup pomegranate
1/2 cup of onions chopped very thin
2tsp of lime juice
1/2 cup of almonds
Mix ingredients together and serve.

Enjoy!

25.10.13

This week has been much better than last.
Work has been less stressful.
I got my wedding band fixed and returned.
Finally bought a bunch of different fruits. I've missed the taste of raspberries.

But the one thing that has made these week so much better is that Alex only worked 1 one night shift.
We were able to have dinners together, cuddle, and finally finish watching Boy Meets World.
Hope you all had a wonderful week.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to play some Xbox with the hubby.

24.10.13

Last week I casually mentioned that a diamond fell out of my wedding band.
I didn't think I would react the way I did.
I got extremely teary eyed.
Not hysterical, but it still hurt.
To most people it's just a ring.
But not to me.
It's more than that.
It's something that symbolizes the promise I made with Alex on July 4th.
It goes without saying that it was a very hard experience for me.
Thankfully the jewellers were understanding and agreed to replace the diamond free of charge.
So the past few days it's been getting fixed.

My mom offered to lend me my great grandmother's wedding ring until I got it back.
Even though this ring isn't "mine", it's still special.
The past couple days I have felt so close to a woman I never had the chance to meet.
A woman who raised my mother.
A woman who accepted the gospel after my mom did.
A woman who worked hard.
A woman who loves my granddad.
And a woman who loves me.

I can not wait for the day I finally get to meet her.
I know I will.

23.10.13

1, 2, 3, 4, 5

I haven't used Pinterest in months.
I used to be able to spend hours on that site, and at the end of it all I felt that I didn't have enough.
And I didn't like it.
So I took a little Pinterest break.
I was a bit hesitant to go on again.
So I decided to go on for one purpose, and one purpose only.
To get inspired.

I've been trying so hard to do things that are more productive with my time, and technically Pinterest isn't one of them.
But at the same time you can find so many fun, new ideas.
So I decided to make a new goal.
I am going to try at least one new thing every week.
Craft, DIY, recipes, a new way to wear an old piece of clothing, a different hairstyle, anything.
I'm all for trying new things, but I hate change.
It's weird, I know.
If you have any suggestions, post them in a comment.
I'm all ears :)
